Diabetes Exchange Diet

When a person is diagnosed for diabetes, the dietician may provide diabetes exchange diet which can give an idea of what type of food and how much is consumed. According to this diet, the frequency of consumption needs to be increased thus including three meals and 1 to 3 snacks in between. This diet should also contain food from all the food groups that has been measured properly so that the tendency to over eat is reduced. This plan will show the meal with specific serving size from each group. If the person wants to exchange the food, he can exchange it with any of the food from the same group along with specified sizes.

An example of exchange diet can be given as follows:

BREADS AND STARCHES
1 slice of bread.
1 small dinner roll
½ cup cooked cereals.
½ cup cooked pasta
½ of hamburger

FRUITS
1 medium apple
1 small banana
17 small grapes
1 kiwi fruits
1 small orange.

VEGETABLES
Can have ½ cup of cooked or 1 cup of raw vegetables.

Cabbage
Spinach
Celery
Broccoli
Eggplant

DAIRY

1 cup skimmed milk
1 cup low fat buttermilk

MEAT AND MEAT SUBSTITUTES

1 ounce fish
1 large egg
½ cup tofu
1 Ounce chicken without skin

FATS AND OILSEEDS

2 tsp peanut butter
1 tsp oil especially olive, canola or rice bran
6 almonds or cashew nuts or 10 peanuts

Foods to be avoided:
Cakes, pastries, cookies, candies, foods made with honey, refined sugar, carbonated beverages.

Thus the food exchange diet gives us an idea about how much to eat with choice in each group.
