Johns Hopkins Diabetes Diet

Michael, 26 what is the best diabetes diet. Is Johns Hopkins Diabetes Diet beneficial.Any one has information on this?

Healthy Diet for Diabetes with Johns Hopkins Diet
A healthy diet with regular exercise is the principle behind the John Hopkins diabetes diet. Weight maintenance within the healthy limits is recommended. Proper timing of insulin injection is essential in case of type 1 diabetes. Meal timing and exercise are important as steps for treatment. Low fat and low calorie diet is provided for an individual suffering from type 2 diabetes. Diabetics are recommended adequate amount of water, especially when suffering from associated complications. High fibre in fruits and vegetables help in preventing the rise in blood glucose levels. It prevents insulin resistance. High glycaemic foods also have a impact on insulin resistance.

Good care of the feet is essential, as the probability of gangrene is high. Amputation follows untreated gangrene. Foot ware is always recommended for diabetics. Saturated fats, cholesterol and salt are restricted. This is especially followed, in case of diabetics with hypercholesterolemia and hyper tension. Weight maintenance is necessary. Weight loss is recommended, in diabetics with a 20 per cent excess weight. Low glycaemic index foods helpful. This also ensures increased intake of high fibre foods. Avoidance of carbohydrates or inclusion of saturated fats is not recommended.

The response of the body to glucose depends on the quantity of carbohydrates consumed. The levels of bad cholesterol are also reduced with a healthy diet. Sugar alcohol and fructose contribute to more calories, in addition to sugar. Small amounts of non caloric sweeteners are recommended. Sugar alcohols are taken carefully, as they not only provide calories, but also has side effects such as gastro intestinal problems and diarrhoea. Saccharin, neotame, acesulfame potassium and sucralose are some of the non caloric sweeteners that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration
