Protein For Weight Loss

Increase in the dietary protein results in increased satiety levels. PYY is a hormone that increases the feeling of satiety in individuals. It is synthesised in the gut. The main principle behind the working of this hormone is that it signals the brain regarding the satiety of the stomach. Deficiency of the hormone PYY is seen in individuals who are over weight. Protein intake results in stimulation of the hormone. They act as hunger suppressants and thereby help in losing weight.

A number of protein powders and shakes are available that are a rich source of protein. They are fortified with nutrients and provide a balance of all the essential nutrients. Certain commercial shakes promise weight loss. It is not significant. About 46 to 56 grams of protein is the daily requirement of protein, in adults. Shakes fail to act as a substitute for the original foods, though they are helpful, instead of meal skipping.

Calorie reduction is the best way to lose weight. Extra protein, in the form of powder or shakes might prove harmful to individuals with complications in the renal tissues. Take the guidance of your physician or nutritionist for further recommendation.
