Dietary Restriction for Diabetes Management

Diabetes diet restrictions are those that are avoided during diabetes. Certain foods are restricted, whereas certain others are provided in negligible amounts. About sixty per cent of the calories are contributed by carbohydrates. Protein and fat contribute to 20 per cent each of daily calories. Refined foods, such as refined sugars, refined flour are avoided. Starchy vegetables, such as tubers, like potatoes, yam and sweet potatoes are avoided. Saturated fats and Trans fats are completely abstained from. Butter, margarine, clarified butter and vanaspathi are some of them. Poly and mono unsaturated fats are preferred. Underground tubers, such as sweet potatoes, colocasia, potatoes and yam are restricted. The fibre in these vegetables are less in comparison to the others.

The method of cooking plays a vital role in maintenance of blood glucose. Frying of foods is replaced by broiling, steaming, pressure cooking, microwave and grilling. Fish packed in oil are avoided. Red meats are not preferred, as they have a high content of invisible fat. Canned foods and preserved foods are substituted by whole and fresh foods. Ready to eat processed foods have a high sodium level and are hence not included in the diet. Lifestyle modifications include avoidance of smoking and alcohol.

Skipping meals is avoided. Regular intake of medications proves helpful in combating the situation. Restrict the usage of salad dressings and sauces. Make your own dressing with vinegar, lime juice and olive oil, instead of mayonnaise. Junk foods such as pizzas are avoided, especially with a glass of coke. While considering the restrictions, reduced intake of carbohydrates is also important, as it results in low blood sugar or hypoglycaemia. A candy or cracker is always helpful, while going out. Alcohol and smoking cigarettes is restricted. Carbonated beverages are not at all allowed.
