Soft Food Diet Health Benefits

The soft food diet is recommended for those individuals or patients, who are recuperating from recent surgery or a prolonged illness.  A soft food diet mainly consists of liquids or extremely soft or mashed foods and is quite different from a regular diet.  The soft food diet is usually meant to help patients to transition from a liquid diet onto soft foods.  Patients with dental issues are also recommended to go on the soft food diet, owing to tooth extraction or gum problems.  Some others are required to go on a soft food diet due to issues regarding digestion, intestinal or stomach problems.  Foods in soft food diet are usually cooked or prepared till they are soft, and can even be pureed or mashed further for the patient's comfort. In most cases, are soft food diet is prepared by boiling or steaming the ingredients; depending on the patient's reference, canned fruits or vegetables are softly or slowly simmered to suit his or her tastes.  Deep fried foods, spiced and seasoned foods, cold cuts or fish with bones are refrained from being included in this particular diet.

Foods in a soft food diet usually contained soft breads or cereals over whole grain meals. Foods made from meats or fish is not usually recommended, for those on a soft food diet.

Food groups in this diet include milk and dairy products, mild cheese, soft and simple desserts, custards, honey, plain ice cream, fruit and vegetable purees, creamed soups with strained vegetables, eggs, peanut butter etc. Certain fruits that contained seeds and thick skin, along with dried fruits and nuts must be kept away when following the soft food diet.  As the individually gradually advances in the soft food diet, combination foods such as soft casseroles, sandwiches, soufflés etc. can be slowly added in the diet.
