Zone Diet for Losing Weight

The zone diet was introduced by Dr. Barry Sears who believes that metabolism can be retooled by consuming a diet that is 30 percent protein, 30 percent fat and 40 percent carbohydrates. Dr Sears is of the opinion that the zone diet can turn back the effects of heart disease, hypertension and even diabetes. Another claim made by the zone diet is that of enhanced athletic performance.

Incidentally, the zone diet does not advocate that you consume few or calories, but different types of foods that may or may not have the same amount of calories that you are currently consuming. The zone diet works on the principle that insulin, which is a hormonal substance that controls the sugar in the blood and is also instrumental in maintaining the fat in the body, is tightly and more efficiently controlled.

The zone diet recommends in reducing the quantity of most simple carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice, white breads, noodles, pastries, pasta, pies, candies, sugary substances, chocolates, cakes, etc. as these foods greatly influence blood sugar and insulin levels. According to the zone diet claim, an individual adhering to this particular diet is likely to lose at least five pounds in the first couple of weeks and thereafter followed by at least 1.5 pounds every week. There are many advantages to the zone diet, one of them being a higher intake of fruits and vegetables, and less concentration of fatty foods and on sugary substances. However it can be quite an arduous task if zone diet has to be followed properly. One needs to carefully measure out the quantity of foods to be consumed and moreover it is also an expensive diet to follow. Because the zone diet contains foods that are low in calories, one can lose weight effectively with their help of this diet. It encourages the practice of healthy eating while consuming in small portion sizes.
