Lactose or milk sugar is broken down by an enzyme, known as lactase. It is a protein which performs the action of breaking lactose into two molecules, galactose and glucose. It belongs to the beta-galactosidase enzyme family. Deficiency results in lactose intolerance. It is primarily seen in the brush border membrane of the intestinal villi.
