Function and Diet of Healthy Brain
The various parts of the body are controlled by the brain or the central nervous system. Functioning of the brain is carried out properly by a healthy diet. Deterioration of the brain is seen during improper feeding of the brain. Adequate supply of protein forms an essential part of a diet aimed at brain performance. Amino acids in protein help in the synthesis of neurotransmitters.
Neurotransmitters are the messengers that convey the massage to the other brain cells. These signals are sent to the various parts for the various functions. Animal foods, such as milk, cheese and eggs are good sources of protein. Legumes, nuts, green leaves, seeds and whole grains contribute to certain amino acids. Carbohydrate intake equally affects the brain and hence care is essential while choosing foods.
Carbohydrates trigger insulin, which is essential for the brain performance. Excessive insulin results in reduction of mental performance. Hence too much of carbohydrates is not recommended. Combination of a complex carbohydrate with a proteinaceous food balances the effect of both the nutrients. The right kind of fats is essential for the brain, as sixty per cent of the brain is made of fats. Essential fatty acids, namely omega6 and omega 3 fatty acids are important. Flaxseeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and fish contain omega 3, whereas corn, sunflower and sesame oil contain omega 6 fatty acids.
