Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders where the metabolism of glucose is disrupted. Now you get glucose form all the foods which you consume (except fats). Any increase or decrease in the blood glucose can affect your general health instantly. This is the reason why a diet or food which a person with diabetes consumes becomes of utmost importance. Management of diabetes should be looked forward as a holistic approach which should involve medications diet and exercise. The following points listed below will help in managing your diet if you have diabetes.

  • Focus on whole cereals grains and its products as they will provide necessary fiber and other nutrients.
  • Pulses, sprouts, combination of cereals and pulses can be made along with including skimmed milk and milk products for proteins if you are a vegetarian. For non vegetarian food sources for protein you can include egg white, lean meat, fish and poultry in moderation. Completely avoid organ meats like liver, brain or kidneys, egg yolk, red meat, and shelled fish as these along with proteins are also loaded with fats which can have altered metabolism and weight gain in people with diabetes (fat should be consumed in limited amounts as diabetes is also commonly associated with heart disease, obesity, stroke and neural abnormalities).
  • Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables but in that you can try and avoid root vegetables like potato, yam, and sweet potato and in fruits you can have a check on mangoes, custard apple, banana and sapota. If you like these listed foods you can have them but please watch the portion size and don't overdo.
  • Drink plenty of water, have your meals and medications at regular times and exercise to keep your blood sugar levels balanced.
