Information on Carbohydrates and Proteins
Carbohydrates and proteins are two macro nutrients which provide energy, fiber and other micronutrients essential for health. Both carbohydrates and proteins provide 4 calories per gram (fat is another micronutrient and provides 9 calories per gram).
Proteins – proteins are the building blocks of the body and the building blocks of proteins are amino acids. Proteins are required by for body for different functions like building muscles and tissues, growth and development, for healthy nails, bones and hair, and also for proper functioning of the hormones. With out on ongoing supply of proteins a body often loses its muscle mass (which is gradually replaced by fat as one grows older), becomes weak and loses its ability to fight diseases. The best sources of proteins include eggs, milk and milk products, pulses, beans, legumes, sprouts, fish, lean meat, poultry and nuts. Some me vegetables and whole grains also provides some amount of protein but it is not in significant amounts.
Carbohydrates – all the vital body organs like brain, heart and kidneys depends on carbohydrates as a source of energy so as it is also known as a brain food for many as glucose is the only form of energy on which our brain survives. Carbohydrates can be simple (sugar and refined items like white breads and pastas) or complex (whole grains, pulses, whole cereals, beans, and vegetables).
