Information on Vegetarian Diet

A vegetarian diet comprises of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, legumes and whole grains. This kind of a diet includes more of fibre and less of fat and cholesterol. Non meat foods are a part of this diet pattern. On the basis of the animal derived foods, they eat; vegetarians are classified as lacto vegetarians, vegans, flexitarians and lacto ovo vegetarians. Dairy products, eggs, nuts, lentils, seeds, legumes and meat substitutes are the primary source of protein. Enriched tofu, fortified soy milk, greens and low fat dairy products provide calcium for ensuring healthy bones and for teeth development.

Cobalamine is also essential in averting anaemia and is seen in eggs, cheese, fortified soy products, enriched cereals and milk. The vegetarian diet is cardiac friendly and helps in averting majority disorders.
