Cardiac Diet for Heart Diseases

Cardiac diet is prescribed for individuals suffering from heart diseases. These changes are better if made prior to the incidence of heart problems. They are minor changes, which prove difficult for a few to follow.  A diet low in cholesterol, sodium and fat is helpful for the heart. Fatty plaques develop on the inside of the artery, thereby reducing the size of the arterial lumen. This results in atherosclerosis, hypertension and other disorders. Heart attack and death are also commonly seen to occur.

Saturated fats are reduced to provide less than 7 per cent of the daily calories, as they have a tendency to raise the cholesterol levels. Poultry, fish and meat are limited to six ounces or less. Leaner cuts of meat are preferred. Meat is considered thrice or four times on a weekly basis. The visible content of fat in meat is trimmed off, prior to consumption. Poultry are consumed after removing the skin. White meat is better than dark meat.

Fish is good for the heart, due to its content of omega 3 fatty acids. Trans fats are abstained from. Vegetable oils are preferred to animal shortening. Baking, pressure cooking, grilling and microwave are the best methods of cooking. Skimmed milk products are helpful. Read the labels carefully, before choosing a food.
