Fiber Diet for Healthy Bowel

A high fibre diet provides adequate fibre in the diet in order to overcome certain conditions. About 25 to 35 grams of fibre is recommended. This helps in combating many conditions, such as varicose veins, diverticulitis, hiatus hernia and constipation. It also helps in reducing the risk of bowel cancer. The diet includes both the types of fibre, namely insoluble and soluble.

A sudden change from a low fibre or normal diet to high fibre diet results in certain complications, such as flatulence and bloating. Whole grain breads and other products are a good source of fibre. Fruits, such as bananas, apples, prunes, raisins, pears and oranges with the skin are helpful. Root vegetables like carrot and turnip are useful sources. Raw vegetables and fresh fruits as a whole form a good part of fibre in the diet. Baked or cooked legumes are equally beneficial.

High fibre diets hold the water in stools and thereby increase the bulk of stools. Fluid intake is automatically, when on a high fibre diet. Diseases related to the bowel are less when on a high fibre. Increasing the fibre intake calls for prior recommendation from your physician. A gradual increase is recommended, as abdominal cramps are also seen to occur otherwise.
