Advice on Diabetes Patient Food

Diet for diabetics follows the basic principle of moderate carbohydrate, moderate protein and low fat with high fibre. Dietary habits are the same as the others. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder with improper insulin activity or insulin insufficiency. Any therapeutic diet is a slight modification of the normal diet. Fats in the normal diet are mostly saturated. Mono and poly unsaturated fats are preferred. Combination of oils is recommended for the acquirement of fatty acids, which are mutually supplemented. About 15 to 20 per cent of the calories are provided by fats.

Carbohydrates, which are complex, are beneficial in lowering or regulating the blood sugar levels. About a third of the carbohydrate is provided for dinner and lunch. Twenty five per cent is provided in the breakfast and the remaining 9 per cent is seen to occupy the snacks. Vegetables, legumes, pulses, vegetables and whole grains provide a good supply of complex carbohydrates. Choice of right foods plays a vital role in the diet of a diabetic. About 15 to 20 per cent of calories are obtained from proteins. Poultry and fish provide the necessary protein and omega 3 fatty acids. Deskinned poultry is helpful. Guidance of your nutritionist is important.
