Diet for Diabetes Mellitus
A diabetic diet comprises of moderate carbohydrate and protein with low fat and high fibre. About 60 per cent of the calories are provided by carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are more preferred, such as legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Protein provides 20 per cent of the calories. Milk, egg, fish, legumes and pulses provide protein in the diet. Fat provides around 20 per cent of the calories. Saturated fats and Trans fats are abstained from. Mono and polyunsaturated fats are more preferred especially fish and soybean which provide omega 3 fatty acids.
Exercise along with diet is also important. Processed and fried foods are avoided. Fasting or skipping meals is not allowed. Exchange system helps in providing alternative to the foods that are allowed for diabetics. About one third of the carbohydrate is provided in the dinner and lunch. About 25 per cent of the carbohydrates are provided for breakfast. The remaining 9 per cent is taken during the snacks. Ready to eat foods are also taken into consideration, as associated complications of diabetes, such as nephropathy calls for sodium restriction. Take the guidance of your physician prior to dietary modifications.
