About thirty per cent of the daily calories should be contributed by fat. Dietary fat is segregated into two broad categories namely, unsaturated and saturated fat.

- Spices such as thyme, basil, oregano, cinnamon, cumin, parsley and cilantro are helpful in enrichment of flavor and taste of foods
- Butter, margarine, clarified butter and other saturated fats are replaced by olive or canola oil. This is due to the fact that saturated fats are the culprits behind the major increase in blood cholesterol levels

Red meat is avoided, as it has layered fat in between. Lean meat is a good replacement. Cooking methods such as boiling, grilling, baking, pressure cooking and microwave are helpful. Deep fat frying is avoided.
A number of medications are available commercially for lowering the cholesterol levels. They function to the maximum level in addition to a good diet. They are not substitutes for a reduced fat diet, though they work in conjunction with the same. |
