Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children

Autism lies under the broad umbrella of serious developmental disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) which appears in early childhood, usually before the age of three.

Some other common ASD’s are childhood disintegrative disorder, rett syndrome, asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder. Striking characteristics of autism include difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication, impaired social interactions and limited or repeated interests and activities. Researches show that males have 4 times more tendency to develop autism then female children.

What is Autism?
Children with autism experience the world differently from the way most of the other children do. Autism children find it difficult to talk, socialize with the world as they experience difficulty in expressing their feelings using words. They need special help to communicate and the ones who don’t get that keep to themselves.

A child may react in a different way to the happenings in the surrounding. Normal sounds may sometimes irritate a child with autism to such an extent that he or she might even cover the ears with hands. A gentle touch or cuddling may also be uncomfortable and not liked by a child with autism. Children behave in a different way like they may flap their hands, repeat same words over and over, have an autism walk, throw temper tantrums or play only with one particular toy. They may not like any changes in their routines or may be very particular about their things or schedule. For example they may get upset if their toys or other objects are not arranged in a certain way which they like or if they are moved or disturbed.

A child with autism also has trouble linking meanings to the words spoken. It can be really frustrating for a child when he or she is not able to find words to express himself in his or her own thoughts. Thus they cannot make easy connection with other children and often have limited or impaired social interactions.

Autism causes lack of a very important thing in the brain – making sense of the world. A brain of a child with autism is unable to understand different senses, may have trouble functioning, going to school and performing daily routine activities.
Although there is no cure for autism, an appropriate autism information, autism help or autism awareness at an early stage can help a child to receive an early treatment and make an enormous difference to grow as an adult autism person.
