Constipation Remedy

Constipation is not a disorder, but a symptom, which is characterized by improper stool elimination.



The stool is dry and small and difficult to pass, thereby hurting the muscles of the rectum. Constipation remedy includes diet, exercise and other home remedies. Diet for constipation involves high fiber, and increased fluids and water. Brown rice, brown pasta, whole grains, cereals, legumes and pulses provide complex carbohydrates, in addition to vegetables and fruits. Decrease the intake of refined foods. They are fat laden, devoid of fiber. About eight to ten glasses of water is equally effective.





A number of constipation remedies are available. They are

  • Guava is helpful in relieving constipation.
  • Include prunes, grapes, papaya and oranges in the diet. Bale fruit is a good laxative.
  • A glass of milk with two teaspoons of honey is effective.
  • Grapes tones up the intestinal muscles and eliminates the stools.
  • Figs are soaked overnight and consumed in the morning.



  • A glass of lemon juice with warm water is helpful, when drunk thrice a day.
  • Drink a glass of water on an empty stomach in the morning.
  • Two teaspoons of fresh aloe gel is effective in constipation cure. It is consumed twice a day.
  • Two teaspoons of castor oil consumed at bedtime milk is useful.
  • Apples after meals are effective in eliminating the stools.
  • Bananas are good laxatives, Apple juice is also helpful.
  • Overnight soaked raisins also prove beneficial.

A gap of four hours between meals is helpful. Fresh and wholesome foods are preferred. Avoid stored foods and packaged foods. Avoid smoking and alcoholic beverages. Caffeinated beverages also result in constipation. Restrict the intake of caffeine containing coffee or tea. Sitting in a Sitz bath is helpful. Change dentures, if not proper as it may lead to improper eating habits thus resulting in constipation. Barley flour is added to soups or stews to relive constipation. They are also available as barley grits and flakes. Fresh walnuts are helpful and should be eaten as it is. Rhubarb is a natural laxative. It is added to honey and apple juice and consumed.

Irregular meals are avoided. Stick to meal timings.



Hurried meals are also not recommended. Chew and masticate food properly to aid in constipation relief. Constipation treatment involves regular physical activity. A brisk walk or jog helps in relaxing the muscles of the colon and rectum, thereby helping in constipation cure. Improper sleep due to stress or grief is relieved by meditation, listening to music, playing with kids and other stress busters. Careful treatment is provided after the identification of the cause of constipation.
