Uncontrolled blood sugar delays healing process:

What should be a balance diet for diabetic patient of age 25, insulin dependent and infected lungs?

Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders which can not be cured completely but can be definitely controlled with the help of insulin, diet and exercise.

As you are having insulin dependent diabetes it is very important to take your insulin shots on time as prescribed by your specialist. Depending on the insulin dose carbohydrate intake should be monitored to avoid hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia.

A registered dietitian will help you to plan your day’s diet according to your requirements and insulin dosage. However the following tips mentioned below will help you in the management of your blood glucose levels to a large extent -

  • Maintain an ideal body weight by consuming a balanced diet.

Focus on unprocessed cereal, grains and its products as they will provide necessary fiber and other nutrients and form the basis for your diet.
  • Have enough servings of fresh fruits and vegetables preferably in whole form. Avoid fruit juices or vegetable juices as far as possible, for example if you have an option between cabbage or apple and cabbage juice or apple juice then prefer eating raw cabbage in the form of salad and fresh apple preferably with skin. Green leafy vegetables and other yellow orange vegetables can be preferred, but restrict the intake of some root vegetables like potato, sweet potato and yam. Some fruits also provide more carbohydrates and can raise your blood sugar levels when eaten in large amounts. These foods include mango, sapota, banana and custard apple; so they should also be included in restricted amounts in your diet.

  • Derive your proteins from egg whites, low-fat dairy products, pulses, beans and sprouts, fish and lean cuts of poultry and meat. Other foods like shell fish, whole cuts of different meats and organ meats like kidney brain and liver also provide proteins, but at the same time they are high in fat and cholesterol so they should be avoided.
  • Drink a lot of water but avoid other sweetened fluids and sweets that can increase your blood glucose levels instantly.
  • Exercise regularly, this will not only help you to maintain your blood glucose levels in the normal range but will also help you to be fit and active. Avoid taking any kind of stress and never forget your insulin dose.
  • An uncontrolled blood sugar often can delay the healing process of certain infections. So for your lung infection consult a specialist to know the exact cause and treatment shall follow accordingly.
