Introduction:
Every year around one million Americans are diagnosed with gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STD) which is seen in both men and women. An unprotected sexual intercourse is one of the main causes of gonorrhea. Sexual activities with multiple partners are also one of the major gonorrhea causes. It is a very serious disease which may cause further complications.

If gonorrhea is not treated on time, it may cause infertility in both men and women. A pregnant woman affected with gonorrhea can also transmit the disease to the unborn child. It is extremely important to have a regular medical check up with a gynecologist or by visiting your nearest hospital.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea:
Burning and irritation at the genital area is one of the main signs of gonorrhea.

The genitals tend to swell up that may cause intense burning while urination. Women generally experience abnormal bleeding and seminal discharge from the vagina, stomach cramps and pain at the genital area. Men generally experience an abnormal discharge of pus from the penis, redness and swelling of the groin and frequent urination. These are some of the basic gonorrhea signs which you may encounter. Other gonorrhea signs that you may experience include fever, vomiting, pain while urinating, nausea and many more. It is very important to check for these symptoms and take action immediately. Presence of blood in the semen and urine is also one of the gonorrhea symptoms.
Sometimes, a person who is infected with this disease does not experience its symptoms at the beginning. It may take up to one to three weeks for it to appear. In this case, it is highly advisable to visit a doctor or a gynecologist every month for a check up.

Diagnosis of Gonorrhea:
Laboratory testing is the only way of diagnosing gonorrhea. A liquid sample from the rectum region of the body is taken and tested in a lab.

The sample can also be taken from the throat, urethra and cervix. These days, urine sample is also taken in order to check for gonorrhea.
