Jaundice due to hepatitis B virus:

Sir, I have suffered from jaundice 3 times in the last 3 years, the fever was mainly during summer causing mild headache, weakness and stomach irritation, I had a dose of hepatitis B in my childhood, please advice proper medication?

It is very important to treat your underlying cause for jaundice to prevent any further episodes of this disease.

Jaundice in itself is a symptom for many diseases rather than being a disease itself. So for this reason know what the cause for your jaundice is and treat that cause. For example if jaundice is due to hepatitis (besides hepatitis B) then treatment for hepatitis should be done first to prevent reoccurrence of jaundice in future.

This is a diet site and I am a diet and wellness counselor so for specific medications or diagnosis you will need to consult a specialist/physician or a health care professional personally. However I can guide you with some dietary tips to prevent jaundice in the future and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  • Drink plenty of liquids, this will help to eliminate the excess bilirubin in the urine and prevent dehydration.
  • Eat well cooked food preferably prepared at home.

Avoid eating outside food as far as possible to prevent another relapse. Make sure that the person who is preparing the meals maintains adequate hygiene levels to prevent contamination of any kind.
  • If you experience headache and weakness then prefer relaxing in a dark room for some time. You can also perform some yoga poses and meditation to relax and decrease stress in your life.
  • Stomach irritations if caused after ingestion of a particular food then avoid that food for some time till your symptoms subside. If stomach irritation and pain persists for longer periods then consult a specialist for immediate treatment.
  • Stop smoking and drinking alcohol completely if you do so. You can choose other beverages like unsweetened fruit juices, coconut water, sugar cane water or other vegetable juices instead.
  • Focus on maintaining an ideal body weight by consuming a balanced diet and exercising regularly. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole cereals, grains and its products instead of processed foods and refined products. Keep the intake of fat low, avoid fried foods, oily foods, meats, meat products, organ meats and shelled fish as far as possible. Also avoid excess intake of caffeine in the form of coffee, tea or caffeinated or carbonated beverages.
  • If your jaundice is due to intake of certain medications then talk to your specialist about the same.

However don’t stop the intake of any medication or change your medications without consulting your specialist.
