Jaundice is condition caused due to excess buildup of bilirubin in the blood that gives a yellow tinge to the mucous membranes, skin and white of eyes.

All the form of jaundice (except jaundice in new born) indicates damage or overload to the liver or inability to remove bilirubin from the liver to the gut. Mild form of jaundice can be treated effectively with adequate rest and following certain diet restrictions.

Some dietary guidelines listed below can be helpful speed up your recovery from jaundice -

  1. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables especially green leafy vegetables. There is no need to exclude any vegetable from your diet provided you dislike it or have an allergy to a particular vegetable.

Fruit juices and vegetable juices can be included liberally in your diet. Make sure to extract fresh juices each time and avoid storing.
  2. Increase your fluid consumption as this will encourage frequent urination which will in turn help to get rid of excess bile pigments from the blood. Besides boiled water you can include lemon juice, barley water, sugarcane juice, coconut water, juice of bitter luffa, beetroot juice, carrot juice, mixed vegetable juices and fruit juices in your diet.
  3. Nausea, vomiting and diminished appetite are commonly experienced by many patients with jaundice thus it becomes important to focus on energy and protein dense foods in the diet. Instead of 2-3 main meals you can have small meals at frequent intervals as this will not only prevent nausea and vomiting but also increase your calorie consumption.

  4. Fatty foods, hydrogenated fats, oils and other oily foods should be avoided altogether for first few weeks. However easily digested fats from eggs and dairy products can be added to make diet more palatable. As the symptoms subside, after a week or two simple monosaccharides like butter and fresh cream can be gradually added in small amounts as they can be easily digested by body.
  5. Avoid sweets, tea, coffee, condiments, strong spices, uncooked pulses, processed foods, junk foods, soda, pickles, pork, red meats and alcohol; preferably have a bland meal for few weeks till the symptoms subside.
  6. Jaundice often leaves a lot of weakness and thus recouping may take a long time. Avoid taking stress of any kind, have a balanced meal and take plenty of rest.
