Vitamin C is beneficial for tonsillitis:

Why should we avoid sweets when having tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils.

Sweets especially those that are artificially flavored, ice creams, sugary beverages, bananas and even cold foods are generally considered as allergens. These allergens can affect the immunity of the body and cause the tonsils to fall prey to the microorganisms. The sugar that is present in sweets can compete with Vitamin C present in the fruits and vegetables and can interfere with its absorption. Vitamin C is generally essential in our body for enhancing the immunity in the body.

Thus we should avoid sweets as sweets can interfere with the immune system in our body.

Tonsils are the part of immune system. If the immune system of the body is affected due to intake of sweets, it can cause inflammation of the tonsils. Thus if we suffer from tonsillitis, avoid intake of sweets that contain added refined sugar and artificial flavors. We should also restrict the intake of sugary beverages, candies and chocolates.

However we can have fruits except bananas as these contain natural sugar. Fruits are also rich in vitamins’ many having Vitamin C and are thus beneficial for tonsillitis. Fruits can be consumed as they are. We can have fruit juices which also improve the fluid content in the body.

Intake of sweets alone cannot cause tonsillitis. A combination of intake of sweets with other environmental factors like cold weather, damp climate, crowded areas and weather changes can contribute to tonsillitis.
Most often tonsillitis is caused by a virus, sometimes due to bacteria and very rarely due to fungus or parasite. Tonsillitis is generally spread through air in the form of droplets in the infection person’s breath, cough or sneeze. We generally get infected if we breathe in these droplets or if these droplets enter through the skin. Sometimes our mouth, eyes or nose can come in contact with objects that were infected with the droplets.

The common symptoms of tonsillitis are sore throat, red and swollen throat, spots on the tonsils and pus formation that covers the tonsils completely or in patches. We may also have fever, runny and stuffy nose.

Surgical removal of tonsils may be necessary in certain cases if the tonsils are heavily infected and contains incurable pockets of pus. In normal condition, medications, home remedies and diet can help in curing tonsillitis.

Diet for tonsillitis is:

  1. Have a balanced diet with all the nutrients present in proper amounts. Increase the intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and pulses.
  2. Have an all fruit diet for three to four days after the symptoms of tonsillitis are over.
  3. Avoid spices and condiments, yoghurt and fried foods as these can aggravate the condition.

Thus we need to avoid sweets during tonsillitis as it can aggravate the situation and decrease the immunity of the body.
