Childhood Obesity

Obesity in children has become an ever increasing cause for worry these days.

The increase in the number of children that are obese or overweight has been blamed on quite a few factors. Some of the more common factors that are being credited for the rise in the population of overweight children include eating habits, environment or psychological factors, hereditary factors and even illness.

Childhood obesity is usually blamed on eating habits and this is often due to the fast lifestyle that a lot of people lead.

Due to the rising costs of living, parents are often too busy making money to cook healthy meals at home. This has led to the constant trips to fast food joints and restaurants that have grease-laden food on the menu. The negative effects that these fatty and salty foods have usually result in overweight children.

Another factor that can be seen as one of the causes of childhood obesity is the environmental and psychological factor. Children who are obese often use food as a security blanket. Instead of facing what they feel head-on they often hide behind food. Feelings of anger, depression, boredom or sadness may translate into eating binges. These binges then result in obesity and weight gain. The environment or their surroundings also has a bearing on the way a child eats. If he or she sees people eating more than is necessary, they will then see it as a normal thing and do the same things themselves.

Heredity is also a factor in childhood obesity. If a child has obese parents, chances are, they will also be obese.

The heredity factor is said to have something to do with the genetic make-up that overweight children inherit from their parents. This fact seems to remain unsubstantiated and still unfounded and most scientists credit the child's obesity to poor eating habits and lack of activity rather than genes. Illness is also one factor that can create overweight children. Such illnesses include physical and psychological illnesses like depression, hypothyroidism and neurological problems. One other factor that is being researched by scientists is the relationship lack of sleep has with childhood obesity. There have been findings that children who lack sleep are more predisposed to becoming obese as compared to children who have enough sleep.

No matter what factors affect a child's weight, trying to keep a child healthy is essential not only for his over-all health but also for his confidence, wellbeing and for his future. Parents should keep this in mind and find ways to keep their children at a reasonable weight.
