Pears

Pears have a juicy sweet flavor with soft and grainy texture.



There are different types of pears available all round the year; however the season for fresh juicy pears runs from August through October. A pear has a large round bottom with tapering end towards the top.



They have a paper-thin skin and depending on the variety it can be yellow, red, green or brown or a combination of two or more of these colors.

Health and pears

  1. Pears are a good source of vitamin C, copper, vitamin K and dietary fiber. Vitamin C along with copper is antioxidant nutrients that help protect the body against oxidative damage caused by free radicals.



    Vitamin C acts as a great scavenger and neutralizes any free radical which comes in contact with the aqueous environments in the body. It stimulates WBC to kill the bacteria and viruses in case of an infection and helps regenerate vitamin E that has been inactivated by disarming free radicals. Thus due to these multiple benefits of this water soluble antioxidant, it is easy to conclude that consuming fruits and vegetables rich in these nutrients helps to protect against cancer, heart diseases and stroke. Vitamin C also plays an important role for immune support and to prevent recurrent infections, colds and flu’s. A medium sized pear provides 11.1% of the daily value for vitamin C and 9.5% of the daily value for copper.
  2. Free radicals may cause an injury to the eye lenses and may lead to cataract or damage the blood supply to the eye causing macular degeneration. To protect the eyesight researches suggest that three or more servings of fruits per day may help lower the risk of age related macular degeneration, which is the primary cause of vision loss in older people by 36% than the other counterpart who consumed less than 1.5 servings of fruits per day.



  3. Other than preventing constipation, the fiber from pears helps to lower high cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart diseases and maintains a good cardiovascular health. It also binds with cancer-causing chemicals in the colon and prevents them from adhering to the colon cells thereby reducing the risk of colon cancer and prostate cancer.
  4. Pears are less likely to produce an adverse response when compared to other fruits and is often recommended as hypo allergenic fruit.
  5. Pesticides residues that come along with pears from almost all municipal drinking water have negative impact on health. Thus individuals wanting to avoid pesticide-associated health risks may choose to eat organically grown pears.
