Eating Disorders

When you eat, you are driven by several factors such as your preferences, people around you, availability of food, appetite, and others.

Eating disorders involve the disturbance of your behavior when it comes to eating. When you feel the compulsion to always eat, or when you feel overly anxious over every meal you take due to dietary reasons then you may have an eating disorder.

When you have an eating disorder, this does not mean you have a weak will.

An eating disorder is a medical condition that needs to be treated and if you have it, you need to address it. Moreover, an eating disorder usually comes with other disorders such as anxiety disorders, depression, and other psychiatric illnesses. Also, it is the females that usually have eating disorders.

One eating disorder is known as bulimia nervosa.

If you are bulimic, this means that you will have a certain ‘episode’ wherein you cannot control eating too much. This episode will happen to you over and over. Because of this you will develop a compensatory behavior wherein you would feel the need to induce vomiting, use laxatives, enemas, and other medications just to avoid getting fat. If you are bulimic, you probably feel relief every time you purge yourself but you do this in secret because you are ashamed of the disorder.

Yet another eating disorder is anorexia nervosa. If you are anorexic, you would feel fear of gaining weight. And even though you are already underweight, you will ignore that and still feel the fear. If you look at yourself your body weight will have a lot of effect at the evaluation. If you are a woman and are anorexic, then you may notice the absence of your menstrual periods. Basically, when you are anorexic, you will think of yourself as fat though your thinness is becoming a danger to yourself.

One more example of eating disorders is binge-eating disorder.

A binge-eater usually experiences this disorder within a certain period of time. When a binge-eating disorder occurs the person would not be able to control him/herself from eating too much. If you are a binge-eater you would probably eat faster than usual, eat until you are uncomfortably full, or eat a lot even if you are not hungry. You could also be always eating alone because you are embarrassed at how much you eat, feel disgusted with yourself, or feel guilty and depressed after you have overeaten.
