Advice on Abdominal Weight Gain Abdominal weight gain occurs due to the fat that has been stored in the abdomen. Abdominal fat, also called as visceral fat can pose a number of health problems like blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. This occurs when the energy intake is higher than the expenditure. Hence apart from measuring the Body Mass Index, it is also necessary to know the waist measurement as abdominal weight gain leads to larger waistline.
Abdominal weight gain can occur due to hereditary, gender and hormones. There are differences in fat distribution in male and female. Male tend to have an apple shaped fat distribution where the fat is stored in the abdomen whereas female tend to develop pear shaped fat distribution where the fat is stored in the hips, butt and pelvic region. However when the female reaches menopause their estrogen level decreases and the fat gets stored in the abdomen. Stress can also increase the fat storage in the abdomen due to increased level of cortisol.
Abdominal weight gain can be reduced by reducing the weight of the body as a whole. If the calorie intake becomes equal with expenditure, it reduces the fat content of the whole body and hence of the abdomen. Avoid over consumption of outside foods that are high in fats. Avoid drinking of alcohol and cigarette smoking. Avoid consumption of sweets, fried foods and carbonated beverages. Prefer raw vegetables, whole grain cereals and pulses and fruits. Doing exercise regularly can help in muscle development of the body and particularly of the abdomen.
